the alluvial fan, rocky mountain national park
this is the roaring river. there used to be a dam at the top of the canyon that it flows through, but it failed in 1982, creating this alluvial fan. it was especially cool to see from the other side of this valley because you could get an idea of how massive this is.
if you look really close, there's a lady in a pink shirt on the right hand side of the picture. people are always nice for scale.
this was a self portrait, believe it or not. i'm sure you can believe, however, that my camera was precariously perched on top of a not flat boulder.
another view of the fan. you can see the little colored specs that are people off to the left. it also gives you a good idea of the size of this thing.
these are just a couple of detail shots that i really liked.

the stanley hotel
this is the coolest hotel. finished in 1909, built by f.o. stanley, creator of the stanley steamer (the car, not the carpet cleaning company). and it's haunted, which is pretty cool. i was first made aware that this hotel is in estes park, co by watching ghost hunters on the scifi channel. they try to prove that places aren't haunted, but it didn't work with this place. they said that it is and i believe them. anyway, i got everyone on board for the 2 hour tour, which was well worth it, i think. here are the highlights:
the lobby. as we learned from our tour guide, all of the woodwork here is really just plaster painted with wood grain. it was done like this for the ABC miniseries of "the shining" it originally was all white, like the music room below.
that's my mom and dad standing next to flora stanley's grand piano. the views from the piano are excellent. i got to play it a little bit while we were on the tour. JP Sousa also played this piano back in the day. flora stanley still comes to play the piano at midnight too. just one of the many reasons to spend the night at this hotel.
katie, shawn, michelle, and charlie in the billiard room. the wood in this room is actually real.
me outside the famous room 217. it's the most haunted room in the hotel. the waiting list is 6 months to a year, and it costs around $700 a night.

this is a very high place. this visitors center is at 11,796 feet above sea level. this is the view from the top of the nearest mountain top, which is obviously quite near.
makayla insisted on coming with us instead of staying at the bottom with grandma. but she made it all the way to the top all by herself. and then i carried her down on my back after she said, "oh, my feet are so tired."
laura and kasey also made the trek, which is impressive considering laura's diminshed lung capacity. (she's pregnant)

shawn, my sister's fiance, is really great with people. he know how to work the system, so much so that he scored us some free tickets to the rockies game on july 3rd. not only were the seats great for the game, but they were amazing for the fireworks afterward.
