"i missed the camping extravaganza for THIS" or "funny how some things never change"

for this post, i've taken to naming it a la rocky and bullwinkle. every new segment has 2 titles. i'm really sorry if you've never watched rocky and bullwinkle and don't get it. just know that both titles are very appropriate.

so, my high school reunion. i really don't have anything good to say about it. the food was good and well organized, so way to go, chad, on that one. there was a very poor turnout, only 13 classmates total. and it was pretty much just like eating high school lunch again. same cliques, same topics, just 10 years old. i agonized for years over whether or not i should go at all, and it turns out that my gut instinct was right. i should not go to high school reunions. my dad's been right about this for many years now. i haven't kept in touch with anyone (which, initially, was not for lack of trying) and i really feel very little remorse for that. as it turns out, i didn't even talk to half of the other 12 people who were there. and i also discovered in retrospect that still tend to go unnoticed by many of my classmates (for that story, ask me. it's much better in person). with that lovely insight in mind, i have now vowed to never attend another class reunion. ever. really, if people cared that much, they'd actually try to keep in touch. i don't really try, so take that for what it's worth. no more reunions for me. i'll just find out about people from my mom, the news examiner, and those random reunions in the grocery store at christmas time. and facebook. maybe.

so, like i said, i can't believe i missed the camping extravaganza for this. and somethings never change.

I'm sorry about a couple of things.
1. That you missed the camping extravaganza and all the fun that would have been for you.
2. That your high school classmates are so blind that they can't see what they are missing by not getting to know you. Their loss!
The thing I am not sorry about is that you spent the day with me and the little girls! :) Thanks Liz!

only by attending a class reunion can you form an opinion on the effacacy of the meeting. but after you get over the "thrill" and "joy" of said reunion, then you can make a resolution to plan to be doing "something else" on that night. in ten years, you may be tempted to go to the 20 year reunion. you might even yield to the temptation because there is nothing else to do. and then will come the painful reminder that the more things change the more they stay the same. reunions don't change. only the color or quantity of hair changes in 20 years.
DON'T GO, LIZZIE! TRUST ME.

Whoa! Hold the phone! This probably should be a face-to-face conversation. I used to come at class reunions just like you do. But that all changed when I ended up at the 15th. Now I never miss them every five years. I've been in charge of one and am hosting the next in two years. I think yours probably wasn't publicized much. That can make or break a reunion. We can talk more about this, but I have found that my classmates as adults are much more humane than they were as kids. People who may not have given me a second thought in high school now greet me with hugs and kisses and we have A LOT to talk about now that life has kicked us around a bit and the playing field is leveled. The cliques are gone because some of the "groupies" don't come for whatever reason. I have a lot more to say on this topic. Come find me and we'll continue. DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!! They will become more human every time you go!!!!!!!! They need YOU!!!!!!!!! My class is becoming so human that we even want to take a cruise together!!!! That's progress!!!!!!

i have heard from some ladies that i work with that you actually start to care again at about the 40th reunion and that all of the cliques are gone. i'll give it another go in 30 years, maybe.

Yah, reunions. I was even in TOWN for my 10th and didn't bother to show up. Life gets SO much better after high school.
